Trip stops (15)

The plains of Moab (Shittim) Josh 2:1; 3:1 The camp east of the Jordan. Joshua sends two spies to Jericho. They are hidden by Rahab the harlot on the city wall.
Crossing the Jordan Josh 3:14-17 The priests carry the ark of the covenant down into the Jordan. The water stops, and all Israel crosses on dry ground – as at the Red Sea.
Gilgal Josh 4:19 – 5:12 Twelve stones from the riverbed of the Jordan are set up as a memorial. The people are circumcised and keep the Passover, and the manna ceases – they eat the produce of the land.
Jericho Josh 6:1-27 The city is shut up tight. For six days they march around it once. On the seventh day seven times – the priests blow the trumpets, the people shout, and the walls fall down. Rahab and her family are saved.
Ai (the defeat) Josh 7:1-26 Israel is defeated at Ai. The reason: Achan has taken some of the devoted plunder from Jericho. The sin is purged.
Ai (the victory) Josh 8:1-29 Joshua attacks again with an ambush. Ai is taken and burned. This time the victory is Israel's.
Mount Ebal Josh 8:30-35 Joshua builds an altar on Mount Ebal and writes the law on stones. All Israel – with women, children and strangers – hears the blessings and the curses read aloud.
Gibeon (the treaty) Josh 9:3-27 The ruse of the Gibeonites: they pose as travellers from a distant land and trick Israel into a treaty. When the deception is discovered, Joshua makes them hewers of wood and drawers of water.
Beth-horon (the southern campaign) Josh 10:1-14 Five Amorite kings attack Gibeon. Joshua marches all night from Gilgal and takes them by surprise. At the pass of Beth-horon the Lord throws down hailstones on those who flee. "Sun, stand still over Gibeon!"
Makkedah Josh 10:16-28 The five kings hide in a cave. Joshua captures and executes them. The town is taken.
Lachish Josh 10:31-33 Joshua besieges and takes Lachish in the southern lowland. King Horam of Gezer tries to relieve the city but is defeated.
Hebron Josh 10:36-37 Hebron is taken – the city that later becomes Caleb's inheritance and David's first royal seat.
Debir Josh 10:38-39 The southernmost city of the campaign. "Joshua struck the whole land – the hill country, the Negev, the lowland and the slopes."
Hazor (the northern campaign) Josh 11:1-15 King Jabin of Hazor gathers a huge coalition. Joshua takes them by surprise at the waters of Merom. Hazor – the mightiest kingdom in the north – is the only city that is burned.
Gilgal (return) Josh 14:6 The campaign is over. "And the land had rest from war." From Gilgal the inheritance is divided among the tribes.
